Sideswipe on I-5 causes Corvette to crash, burn
The unrecognizable wreckage of a bright red Corvette sits on a Black Butte Towing flatbed truck in Dunsmuir Tuesday, June 21, 2011. The sports car sideswiped another car and left the road at about 3:09 p.m. on southbound I-5 just past Mott Road, according to the California Highway Patrol. The driver climbed out of the car before it caught fire and burned to the frame.
Aside from them adding 14 years to my age, I guess this is an accurate article, although they also failed to mention the idiot was driving like a bat out of hell:
Dunsmuir, Calif. —
A man from Fairfield received minor injury Tuesday, June 21, 2011, when the car he was driving made contact with another car on I-5, left the road and crashed into a tree just south of the Mott Road exit north of Dunsmuir.
California Highway Patrol Sgt. Jim Malner said William Hukill, 50, climbed out of his car and was speaking to responding emergency personnel when the 1974 Corvette caught fire. Hukill reported minor pain and was transported to Mercy Medical Center Mt. Shasta.
Hukill’s vehicle and a 2006 Saturn driven by Ashland resident Tami Jo Askren, 62, sideswiped in a southbound lane just after 3 p.m. Hukill, according to the CHP, lost control and ran off the road into the brush until his car hit a tree.
“It uprooted a tree this big around,” said Black Butte tow truck driver Bo Mitchell, holding her arms in a circle to represent a diameter of approximately 16 inches.
Askren was able to maintain control of her Saturn and pulled over safely.
Sgt. Malner reported that alcohol or drugs were not a factor. He said no rescue equipment was necessary.
Dunsmuir Fire Chief Dan Padilla said firefighters extinguished a fire enveloping the Corvette, which was burnt to the frame, and they suppressed a minor fire that scorched the tree and brush but did not spread.
