Review: Pan’s Labyrinth

I went to see Pan’s Labyrinth with a friend last night. It was very different from what I expected from the previews I saw. I thought it was going to be a fantastical feel-good movie. Instead it was very dark, disturbing, and graphically violent. It was subtitled in Spanish, which I wasn’t prepared for either. Not that I object because I’m a fairly good reader, but I like to know these things ahead of time because it does distract me a bit from the plot and the goings-on of the film. The special effects they touted were mediocre by the usual standards. I left the theater feeling rather deflated and flat. Personally, I wouldn’t rush again to see this movie, nor would I recommend it, especially to people with younger children. I think that most of the audience was prepared for something similar to what I was expecting, judging from the reactions to the scenes in the movie. I don’t want to give too much of it away, but suffice it to say, I found the experience less than satisfactory.
